The area is one of unspoilt and unexploited natural beauty, mountains, beaches, rivers and forests, not to mention small villages with welcoming cafés and bars.
The coastline is not dissimilar to Cornwall or Brittany; rugged headlands and sandy coves washed clean by the Atlantic. There are 200km of coastline to explore in Galicia and many islands including the nature reserves of Cies and Ons. The Galicians have a close association with the sea and rightly pride themselves on the local fish and shellfish (mariscos), particularly octopus, which you can find at every market (Ferreira). Galicia is green, mountainous and fertile. The presence of the raiding Celts and that of their predecessors can be found scattered throughout the hillsides around Camp Lameiro in the form of Petroglifos, primitive carvings of ancient man, his beasts and his quarry etched into the rock of the mountains. Campo Lameiro has the highest density of such carvings anywhere in the world.
For the active, the area lends itself to a full range of outdoor activities:
Mountain biking,
walking,
Fishing – sea and freshwater,
Surfing,
Diving,
Paragliding, all of which can be organised on request. The area is rich in sites of architectural and historic interest, Santiago De Compostela, Baiona, Pontevedra and all the fortified towns of northern Portugal. The small Spa towns of Cuntis and Caldas De Reis are within 30 minutes drive of Pazo De Betarra, they are famous for the medicinal properties of the thermal waters and the baths are open to the public. Pontevedra is the nearest town, located at the mouth of the River Lerez in the centre of the Rias Baixas. This is one of Galicia’s best historical centres, the old part of the town is completely pedestrianised, an ideal place to stroll around and enjoy the numerousplazas, mansion houses, museums and narrow cobbled streets. Every year, Pontevedra hosts numerous festivals, some of the famousones being the Fiestas de La Virgin Peregrina (bull fighting), the international Jazz festival and the Feira Franca (medieval festival) www.descubregalicia.com.
Of course, there are the thousands of excellent tapas bars and restaurants serving local seafood, wine, hams and cheese. For those in need of relaxation there are beaches, the pool, the walks, the tranquillity of Pazo de Betarra. |
